Up to the Bastille in the bubbles
The famous bubbles of the Grenoble cable car link the city centre to the Bastille fort in just a few minutes. The spherical cabins, inaugurated in 1934, have become the city’s emblem. Arriving 260 metres higher offers a striking panorama over the Grenoble basin and the three ranges that surround it. A bold and photogenic first date.
The fort and the Bastille trails
At the top, the ramparts of the fort invite you to wander. From the terraces you can glimpse the Isère winding below, the old roofs of the centre and, in the distance, the snowy peaks. The Dauphins and Acropole site is freely open, and several paths lead back down to town on foot, through the Dauphins garden or the Porte Saint-Laurent, as mood and stamina allow.
Three ranges to share
Grenoble has a rare privilege: the Vercors, the Chartreuse and Belledonne are all a bus ride away. In summer you can hike to a mountain lake; in winter you can ski together on the slopes of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse or Chamrousse. On Lyad, members from Grenoble share their favourite trails and refuges; it is up to you to find someone to gain a little altitude with.
